Super Mario 3D World Gets Surprise New Update

Nintendo has released a new update for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, which comes as a surprise for many players, as the title has been out for some time. Nintendo continues to provide support for its popular titles like Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, even if the current update is somewhat small.

The original Super Mario 3D World was released for the Wii U in 2013. As a way to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the franchise, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury was released for the Switch in 2021, pairing the original game with the newly released Bowser’s Fury. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury received glowing reviews from critics, sold over 13 million units, and currently holds an average critic score of 89 on OpenCritic.

Now, Nintendo has stunned players with a surprise update for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. The latest 1.2.2 patch for the game is quite small, and it became available on September 30. According to the official patch notes, “several issues” have been addressed to enhance the overall gameplay experience. While Nintendo has not clarified what issues were affected, it’s expected that the title will boast a less buggy, more polished experience for all players after the update.

This was not the first surprise update for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury to appear in 2025. Earlier this year, Nintendo announced that the popular platformer would get a free Switch 2 update. The update brought improved visuals, an optimized frame rate, HDR support for Bowser’s Fury, GameShare for up to four players in Super Mario 3D World, and the ability to use GameChat features.

This upgrade was followed by a minor Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury patch released in July. The 1.2.1 patch fixed a system behavior issue that happened for gamers playing on the Switch 2, but didn’t affect much beyond that.

The Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury update comes right before the release of Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2, which marks the debut of these classic titles on the Switch. Originally announced during a Nintendo Direct, these games will be available on October 2, and commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. franchise. A follow-up to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, titled Super Mario Galaxy Movie, has also been announced, and will be released in theaters on April 3, 2026, marking a great time for fans of one of Nintendo’s most iconic franchises.
